About Red Hat Linux
Red Hat Linux is the solution for businesses that need to share files, printers, and Internet access. Other benefits include email and web hosting server capabilities. But the best part is that Red Hat Linux can be a substitute for Microsoft products at a fraction of the cost. Small businesses can compete against large corporations by taking advantage of technology. Today, the cost of hardware, and now software, makes it possible for a small business to acquire the same technology used by large corporations. Technology is an effective tool for creating, sharing, getting, and distributing information. And this is where Red Hat Linux fits in. Do you need to share and distribute information? Use Red Hat Linux as a file and internal email server. Share a single Internet access connection, and research via the Internet can be done by all employees. Usually companies would buy Windows 98, ME, or XP for the desktop, and Windows NT or 2003 for the server. This is fine except for one thing, the expensive licensing cost. For example, a desktop PC running MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) would need an operating system license (e.g. Windows XP), and a license for Office XP. These two alone would cost P13,200 per desktop PC. The software license is almost as expensive as the hardware! Fortunately there is a cheaper alternative. For the desktop, you can use Red Hat Linux for the operating system and OpenOffice as a substitute for Office XP. And how much would this cost? Nothing. These software are legally free to use. What's the catch? There is none. Take for example the case of University of the Philippines. Recently they have decided to replace their Microsoft software with free software such as Linux and OpenOffice. This is because Linux is inexpensive, reliable, and secure. And, as an added bonus, less virus attacks. Related Articles and Solutions This section features more information about Linux and Open Source Software solutions.
