Success Story: Central Bank of India

When regulations mandated that Indian banks be fully computerized by December 2004, Central Bank of India knew they had to find a solution focused on ease of support and maintenance but also optimized for scalability. After much evaluation and testing, Linux was found to be the best choice, with Red Hat being the strongest provider. CBI has now implemented a Red Hat solution across 1,115 branches, with 1,770 additional branches planning to deploy in 2004.

Ask Shadowman

May. When the showers have brought the flowers, and rites of spring, a young geek's fancy is turned to thoughts of setting up that mail server of their dreams. And you? Stuck like a muck stick. You call and he is there faster than you can flame a troll. Or fast enough to almost meet his monthly deadline, taking a single name byline like Hector or Hammer he is... the Shadowman.

Read Shadowman's advice.

Tips and Tricks: Comparing common DOS and Linux commands

Many Linux commands typed at a shell prompt are similar to the commands you would type in DOS. In fact, some commands are identical. This month we show you how some of the more common commands translate.

UTB Contest 52: Dressed for success

Last month we asked folks what Shadowman is wearing...besides the fedora. Looking at your answers, we are surprised how many people think Shadowman just runs around naked. Maybe it has something to do with Red Hat's commitment to open source? Our best answer though came from Kei Davis who said, "What's Shadowman wearing? Besides the hat:

  • A cloak of invisibility. (A metaphor for transparency.)
  • A business suit. (That's where Linux is headed.)
  • A leisure suit. (We do it for fun.)
  • A TUXedo. (Ha ha, you'll get this response by thousands, I'd guess.)
  • His 'birthday suit.' (He's invisible after all, so why not?)"
Thanks for all the great responses. We'll be sending Kei a Red Hat baseball cap for the great answer.

UTB Contest 53: What's Red Hat Enterprise Linux really made of?

There is a saying that goes, "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts." This definitely applies to the entire open source community: countless individual contributors who write and/or revise untold lines of code for the greater goal of a first-rate, accessible-to-the-masses OS.

In the case of Red Hat , the majority of our customers know quite a bit about Red Hat Enterprise Linux. However, not much attention is paid to the parts. This month's contest challenges your knowledge of what Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 is really made of. Snips and snails and puppy dog tails? Sugar and spice and everything nice? You'd be surprised.

Within the Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3 AS RPM package list, name:

1. ...the only profession.

2. ...two types of snakes.

3. ...two subtypes of drinking.

4. ...a precious stone.

5. ...a lovable type of dog.
